Why clean your heating system
Sludge is formed by corrosion inside radiators, pipes and soldered joints. As well as affecting the performance of the heating system, the build-up of magnetite can affect the system's energy efficiency as it struggles to transfer heat; radiators and pipes are blocked, and the flow of water is restricted. You end up with higher energy bills.
Flushing the entire system using chemicals and removing magnetite with specialist filter offers a surefire way to remove even the hardened debris that may have built up over time.
Filters can only collect debris that is floating and moving in the system. So if a magnetic filter has already been fitted, a heavily sludged heating system may have corrosion sitting in the radiator and pipework that can't be removed by filters alone. To shift heavily settled magnetite and rust, add a cleaner to the system so that it can circulate and lift sludge in the pipework and radiators.
The potential long-term savings from carrying out a flush of the system could outweigh the costs: a proper system flush to fully remove sludge will reduce the chances of your boiler breaking down. Making sure the the water in the system is as clean as possible will also help it run at its most effective: radiators can gain up to 47 per cent more heat without using more energy because the system will work more efficiently, resulting in your energy costs.
Just replacing the boiler wont solve the problem of deep seated sludge; if it is not removed, it will remain in the pipework and radiators and damage your new boiler from day one. In fact 60 per cent of new boiler breakdowns within the first year of operation are due to sludge.
If you wouldn't consider putting old oil into your new car, don't run your new boiler on old water from your heating system without making sure it has been flushed through first.
